Racism is about power. Racism operates at structural (systemic), organisational, interpersonal and individual levels. Racism is present not only in overt acts of exclusion and harassment, but also within the structures, processes and policies that we all interact with on a daily basis. Racism is enmeshed with systems of Colonisation in complex ways.

Different levels of racism require different actions. For example, conducting a staff training program on unconscious bias will have limited impact on organisational and structural racism. Typically individual and interpersonal racism receives more focus than organisational and structural racism, and as a result, deeper, systemic racial injustice continues to flourish.

Addressing systemic racism is a long, uncomfortable process of calling familiar systems into question, but this discomfort is necessary in order to create substantial, sustainable change in the sector. Find more information on taking organisational anti-racism action through policy development.
