Ditch consultation for collaboration

In many cases, it’s better to collaborate than consult. This encourages more equitable power relationships, shared compensation and shared creative control.

For example, rather than writing a script about people from another culture and then hiring a consultant to check that it’s ‘culturally appropriate’, it’s better to collaborate with a scriptwriter from the relevant cultural background from the get-go.

Avoid factors such as unconscious bias and stereotyping by creating meaningful collaborations that share power and creative control.

How do I do it?

If you are interested in developing a project that draws on the creative expressions of another culture, seek out partnerships with artists from that culture before you begin. Leverage your networks for leads.
