Academic behind 'inclusion rider' explains Frances McDormand's Oscar speech

Flagged by Frances McDormand in her Oscar acceptance speech, an 'inclusion rider', or 'equity rider', is a clause in an actor's contract that insists upon a certain level of diversity in a film's cast and crew. The idea was first flagged by University of Southern California's Stacy Smith in 2016.

"Smith said A-list stars could use inclusion riders to ensure proper representation and inclusion of women, people of color, LGBT people and people with disabilities."
