The Surprising Solution to Workplace Diversity

Arwa Mahdawi makes a call to action for HR managers to find ways to reduce their unconscious bias. She gives an example of the company GapJumpers, which uses blind hiring practices and found that 60% more minority applicants were selected for interviews. She criticises superficial approaches (for example, diversity training and tokenism) for not focusing on dismantling endemic problems such as institutional racism, sexism, and ableism etc, and instead opt for a quick fix.

Orchestrating Impartiality: The Impact of "Blind" Auditions on Female Musicians

Evidence that “blind” auditions reduce gender-biased hiring in symphony orchestra compositions.

The outcomes of this study proved there is sex-biased hiring practices in the industry. Using a screen to conceal candidates from the jury during preliminary auditions increased the likelihood that a woman musician would advance to the next round by 11%. During the final round, “blind” auditions increased the likelihood of women musicians being selected by 30%.
