BFI diversity standards 'failing to tackle race discrimination in UK film industry'

Article on an evaluation of the BFI Diversity Standards in relation to Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) participation after six years in operation by Dr Clive Nwonka from the London School of Economics.

'The research, conducted with the co-operation of the BFI, suggested that BAME participation in the industry remained considerably lower than other under-represented groups, particularly in behind-the-camera roles.'

Black Face

Overview of the history and contemporary expression of black face from the UK and the US.

'Popular contemporary ways of displaying blackface include: darkening your skin and especially your face; wearing clothes that you assume all black people wear and in a fashion that is mocking (think ‘ghetto’ or ‘thug’); throwing up obscure gang signs, or what you assume are gang signs, in order to ‘act black’; and depicting blackness in all its complexities as a caricature.'

Developed by the US City of Portland for its bureaus, this tool offers a self-assessment to assess how equity is prioritised and addressed within budgets. While not developed for arts projects, this checklist offers insight into methods of equity-testing budgets.
