Racial Equity Impact Assessment
A two-page guide to conducting Racial Equity Impact Assessments including 10 key questions to anticipate, assess and prevent adverse consequences of proposed actions on different racial groups
An equity impact assessment (EIA) is a planning tool used to assess the impact of a project on different groups. Like environmental impact assessments or workplace risk assessments, they can help to systematically uncover potential adverse effects while a project is still in the planning stages.
In the UK, EIAs are often carried out to ensure compliance with the equality duty of the public sector under the Equality Act 2010, though since 2011 these are no longer a requirement for government departments. Increasing numbers of organisations in the US are also using EIAs to assess their projects.
You can use a process to identify key ‘choice points’, typically when resources are being allocated to a project, to assess whether an EIA is necessary. If it is, use or adapt an Equity Impact Assessment template to anticipate, assess, and mitigate against any potential adverse effects.
